Principal's Message

August 2008

Greetings to Hollencrest families and community members.

Welcome to Hollencrest Middle School! We are proud of the accomplishments of our students and the support of our parents and community volunteers. Our school is one that works towards preparing students for a successful transition to high school and beyond.

As you well know, middle school years can be a trying period for our students. As our students between the ages of 11 and 13 transition from childhood to young adulthood, they undergo emotional, intellectual, and psychological changes that surface in many ways. It is a critical period when students begin to form a sense of self and develop life long habits. It is a perfect oppoutunity to mold life long learners and productive community members.

Hollencrest Middle School is committed to providing a comprehensive learning environment that produces academic excellence, responds to the developmental challenges of young adolescents, ensures equity, and maintains high expectations for all students. In order to accomplish this, we believe that students should attend school on a regular basis. To support high attendance rates, we have held monthly attendance competition between classes and grade levels! The winners of the monthly attendance competition have earned pizza and root beer float parties, scavenger hunts and "husky tags"! These efforts have paid off as HMS led all district secondary schools in student attendance.

We are looking forward to a new school year filled with more opportunities for our students. The changes we have implemented reflect our commitment to personalize our academic program to meet the needs of our kids. New elective courses are being added to our existing line-up: Yearbook/Journalism, ASB, Theatre, Creative Writing, and Spanish - and they are open to all students. The school is transitioning to an eight (8) period day, which will allow students extended learning time in Language Arts and Math each day. Students will also have access to all content and enrichment opportunities during, before and after school.

I am very excited to be joining the Hollencrest family and know this will be a very productive and exciting school year.
